Selina Wigmore Counselling

I work according to the psychodynamic model which means we look at past experiences and how they have shaped the present. In exploring, processing and understanding the past, we can shed the mould that this has placed on us, enabling us to grow into a true way of being ourselves.

Why seek counselling?

Anyone can benefit from counselling, whether you have a specific reason for attending or not, it is a process of making your unconscious conscious. Most people attend when they experience conflict due to their unconscious processes, resulting in anxiety, stress, depression, relationship issues and general dissatisfaction or disconnection with life in general. It can be helpful to talk through feelings and experiences with someone who is not judgemental, nor directly involved. Sharing can sometimes be enough to offer relief and reduce the conflict, sometimes a little more is required.

What does counselling with me involve?

I am here to listen with no judgement and to explore your feelings with the aim that your unconscious self becomes more conscious so that you know and understand yourself and your responses better. I am a psychodynamic counsellor, which means that I explore your childhood experiences and identify if and how these continue to influence you. For example, your relationship with your manager could carry echoes of past relationships with parents, teachers, or other figures of authority from your childhood resulting in you feeling inferior and preventing you from climbing the management ladder at work. It is your past that can hold you back, rather than your capability.

By recognising echoes from your past, you can prevent them from influencing your present and genuinely engage in life and relationships.

Starting your counselling journey
I offer counselling over the telephone, online via Zoom or in person in Worthing. Leave me a message, text or email me with your name and contact information and I will get back to you so we can arrange a free introductory session.

This session will be up to 30 minutes, carried out by Zoom or over the telephone, this gives you the opportunity to get a sense of who I am and whether you would be comfortable working with me. We will briefly discuss your needs and expectations of counselling and whether I am the right counsellor for you. Following this I will go over the counselling contract, collect some background information and we can set a date to start our sessions. Your introductory session does not mean you have to continue counselling with me- it is an opportunity for us both to assess the other and you are under no obligation should you feel that I am not the counsellor for you.

Counselling can be helpful for:
Anxiety, depression, family or relational issues, attachment disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, loneliness, low self-confidence, stress, low self-esteem.

I treasure the time I spend discussing my life with Selina. I feel in safe hands, like there’s no judgement – I feel heard and guided through the problems I face and I look forward to discussing things with her. I leave the sessions feeling validated with plenty to think about. I can slowly see changes in my confidence to apply boundaries in my life and really feel like I’m benefiting from therapy in my relationships.

Information about sessions:
Sessions are booked for the same time each week or fortnight, and each session lasts 50 minutes. You can opt for a set number of sessions, however I often suggest open ended work, to prevent any anxiety around limitations and expectations- this would be discussed in your free introductory session.

Each session is charged at £50 which is payable within 5 working days of the session- If I cancel a session you are not charged.

I do not set homework or give you forms or tests; you bring whatever is on your mind and we see what we can make of it, often linking back to previous sessions.

Initial session:
I offer a free initial or assessment session which can be carried out face to face or online via Zoom (please refer to availability below). In this session we discuss any particular presenting issues and if and how I can help you.

You are under no obligation to continue after the initial session.

Should you wish to continue, I will provide you with a contract to be signed and sessions would repeat from your initial session date.
